As the Greater Portland area prospers, Westbrook is also becoming a desired community for people to settle. Along with the benefits this growth brings to Westbrook, it also pushes the cost of living up.
The rising cost of housing makes it difficult for lower and fixed income residents to stay in the city. Businesses of all sizes are having a difficult time recruiting and maintaining workers. In the meantime, there is a shortage of public transportation for people coming from outside the city into town. As someone who is from a low-income family, I can easily relate to families who are struggling to afford an Apartment. The average market rate for an apartment is ~ $1,030-$2100, depending on the number of bedrooms. Although there are many nice apartments for rent, there are also many sub-par housing units.
Advocating for quality, affordable housing is something I am passionate about and I look forward to discussing with my fellow counselors; it will be one of my priorities.
